Captain Hook was not pleased. In fact, as he crawled onto the shore after his narrow escape from the jaws of the hand-eating crocodile, he was exhausted and full of rage.

Around him, the other pirates who had escaped from Skull Rock were struggling to their feet. They were waterlogged, their hair drenched and their eyes red from the salt water, but they had survived—which was more than could be said about some of the crew. Spitting out a stream of water, Bill Jukes watched as fellow pirate Gurley fastened Mr. Bear’s arm onto a necklace and hung it around his neck.

Ignoring the others, Hook sneered. “Never again, Mr. Smee!” he said as he struggled to stand in the thick sand. “Never again shall I be so humiliated.”

“A familiar refrain,” Mr. Smee said as he wrung out his belt.

Hook’s eyes narrowed, but he ignored his first mate. He held up his hook. “My hook is rusting away!” he cried.

“It’s just a little wet is all,” Smee said, trying to comfort the agitated captain.

But Hook was not having it. Even the suggestion of a rest was tossed aside. Hook wanted nothing but to get back to his ship. But then he remembered the crocodile. He was out there somewhere, just waiting for his chance to pounce.

When Hook said as much to Smee, the older man shook his head. “Remains at large, sir,” he said.

Smee gestured to the water lapping at their feet. No crocodile. No ticking. No tocking. It was all quiet.

“Like the boy,” Hook said when he saw Smee was right. “Today started off so well.”

Smee shrugged. The good-natured soul was always trying to see the best of a situation. He was quite the opposite of his captain.

“There’s always tomorrow, sir,” Smee suggested.

Hook shook his head. “No!” he shouted, scaring the other pirates, who were still trying to catch their breath and get water out of their boots. “No more tomorrows. Tonight! We will return to the ship…”

“Perhaps, Captain,” Smee said, raising a finger. “If I may suggest…”

But Hook brushed him off. He was focused on his new plan. “We shall prepare to attack…”

“The boy…he lives on land,” Smee added.

Hook nodded and rolled his eyes. Of course the boy lived on land. He knew that. What kind of imbecile did Smee take him for? His brilliant plan was to attack when Peter took flight in the morning.

“Land,” Smee repeated, not giving up, “which is where we currently find ourselves.”

Hook paused mid-planning. He looked at his feet, which were, undeniably, on land. It was wet, but it was land. He looked back up at Smee and narrowed his eyes. “Go on.”

The man gulped nervously. He was not used to people actually listening to him. Fidgeting with his belt, he tried to say out loud what had been racing through his head. “Well, it’s like this. I think to myself, standing on solid ground as we currently find ourselves: where on land might the boy be?” As he continued, he grew bolder and his words came faster.
